‘i sea, i care’ Challenge

Update on the 2010 i sea, i care Challenge

Web 11 Jan 700X120.jpg

Thursday and Friday 21 and 22 January:
On Thurday 21 January we will be at Indented Heads and StLeonards. On Friday will will be at Altona.

Please note: The Indented Heads Program on Thursday 21 January has been moved from the Jetty along the coast to the beach oppostite the wreck of the Ozone. Melref: 240K9.

So far we have run education programs for about 1200 children and adults, helping them to marvel at our local marine life. We also introduced some children to our new inflatable mascot.

Our dolphin surveys have found common dolphins off Mornington and bottlenose dolphins between Rye and Portsea. The sighting of common dolphins during Summer is a very important research outcome, being the first confirmation that the commmons stay in the bay during Summer.

We are concerned about boats harasssing dolphins. One vessel in particular was photographed driving very close but sped off before we could get his registration when he realised he was being photographed.

The 2010 'i sea, i care' Challenge is running from 6-22 January, with three weeks of research and marine education, covering 2,500 square Km and running formal programs with over 2,000 people in 18 locations around our bays.

We call it the "Challenge" because we want to challenge people to change their thinking. We want Victorians to perceive that "what lives around OUR coast is too precious to lose".
